Fr Andre Gomes was a gavkar ( Local inhabitant) of Issorcim. Fr Andre Gomes served as the dean in Canara and later as Vicar of Agassaim till he passed away on 3rd July 1657.
During that period, Shivappa Naik was the Ruler of Bednore. He allowed Goan local priests to preach the gospel within his kingdom and he wanted a brown skinned Bishop to be appointed for the Christians of Bednore. The Portuguese civil authorities accepted the idea and negotiated with the church authorities and through them with the Holy See. The Portuguese King Dom Joao IV recommended the name of Fr Andre Gomes, However the Papal letter of consecration reached only after Fr Andre Gomes had passed away.
