St. Joseph High School, Arpora, Goa was the first English medium school started in Goa. The school was started in the year 1887. The founder of the school was William Robert Lyons, a Jesuit Scholar who was fondly and popularly called as Fr. Lyons.
In 1931. Fr. Filipe Neri Mendonca an outstanding educationist and a strict disciplinarian from Aldona was appointed as the school principal. Fr Filipe Neri Mendonca was the principal of St. Joseph High School, Arpora, Goa for 35 years which is one of the longest spells as a Principal for any educationist across educational institutions. Fr. Mendonca is credited with the development brought about in the St. Joseph High School, Arpora, Goa which made it a popular school in the Arpora area.
The St. Joseph High School, Arpora, Goa was one of the few established schools offering matriculation to students. Students from The Sacred Heart of Jesus High School and the St Francis Xavier High School in Siolim which used to offer studies upto the std 4, then shifted to the St. Joseph High School, Arpora, Goa to complete their matriculation in English.
