Jose Camillo Lisboa

Jose Camillo Lisboa was born on 5 March 1823 at Assagao, Bardez, Goa.  At the primary level he studied Latin and Philosophy, He then moved to Bombay to study English and Mathematics and completed his matriculation at the Medical College of Grant in Bombay. he attained his diploma as a graduate from the faculty of Medicine in 1851. He was appointed as the Assistant Surgeon at the Hospital of Jamshedjee Jejabhoy in Bombay.  At the request of Doctor Peet, the hospital’s chief surgeon, Mr. Lisboa was appointed to replace him in the position and also occupy the chair of anatomy, this appointment being the first of a native Goan amongst European surgeons.  He performed several surgical operations at the hospital and one of them, at the request of the head of the establishment, was attended by many European doctors; The praise he received was reflected in the documents that are archived at the hospital. He later resigned from the government job, when the hospital transferred him to Karachi and at the end of 1851, he began to practice the private clinic which became very famous. In 1863 he fell ill and seeing that he was not enjoying his life in Bombay or the air in Matheran where he would go to unwind, he went to Europe in 1864 and traveling through England, France and Portugal, he returned to England in 1866. He spent a few years in England before returning to the city of Bombay to continue his clinic. He was a member of the Grant College Medical Society and the Royal Asiatic Society (Bombay branch) during his medical career he had written several articles on leprosy, cataracts amongst others, which are published in the Journals of the Bombay Medical and Physical Society.
