Felippe Dias, was born in Taleigao, Ilhas, Goa on August 23, 1833. He was the son of the distinguished physician Eugenio Dias. He went for his further studies in humanities in Lisbon in 1848. He enrolled in the polytechnic school and completed the course of the navy on Sep 29, 1853. In the same year he took a trip to Goa on the frigate D Fernando. In 1857 he went to Mozambique and was a part of the Marine Guard. He then continued his journey to Lisbon.
In 1858 he sailed on the ship Vasco da Gama to Angola; in 1859 he went to Macau and Timor in the ship Martinho de Mello and being in Macau, he traveled to Canton, Hong Kong and Singapore; he was then promoted to 2nd lieutenant in August 1860. In 1861 he came again to Goa in the frigate D. Fernando and in 1864 returned to Lisbon after a posting in Damao. In the following year he went to Brazil and was posted in Bahia. He then returned to Lisbon in 1868. In 1869 he went to Cape Verde along with Guinea for 2 years. He returned to Lisbon in 1871. He came to Goa on the Infante D Joao in November in the same year and returned to Lisbon on 5 November 1873 with a stopover in Bombay. He has much esteem from his superiors and comrades and served all his postings with dignity.
