Father Sebastião Salvador Baptista Cana, was born in Benaulim, Salcete, Goa. He was elected deputy to the courts of Portugal in 1848 and left for Portugal via the Mediterranean in the same year; During the short time he lived in Portugal he made a brilliant role reciting beautiful speeches such as those he made about the Fondás (English subjects of Saunt Varee who took refuge in the territory of Goa and were supported, by the Goan coffers ); about the obstruction of the Goa bar; about the regiments of the communities and brotherhoods which contains prescriptions worthy of reform and improvement; — about the regularity of the post office; — and finally about the endless question of the Portuguese patronage.
He earned respect and general sympathy in his homeland, not only in the chamber, but also in the highest circles of good society. Unfortunately, a few months after having such an appreciated life, death came to surprise him in the midst of his patriotic zeal on July 27, 1859, when he was only 40 years old.
Fr Cana from Goa was a distinguished student in the classes of Latin, philosophy and theology and shortly before being ordained a priest he entered the public service as assistant in the Latin class in the capital of New Goa.
