António Manuel Constâncio Coutinho was born in Margâo, Salcete, Goa. He completed his preparatory studies in Goa. He then went to Bombay to complete his studies in English and then enrolled at the Grant Medical College, where he had a brilliant career, as he won prizes every year and in different branches of medical science. He graduated with a graduate degree in 1856 and was appointed the assistant surgeon and transferred to Gogo, a neighboring territory of Diu.
However, he resigned shortly afterwards from this official service and began private practice in the city of Bombay and established a successful clinic there. He was also a member of the Medical Society of Grant College.
