History of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church, Panjim, Goa ( Panjim Church) :
The Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church, Panjim is also popularly called ‘The Panjim Church’ by the people of Goa. The original chapel of the village of Panjim was founded by the Dominicans before 1541. In 1584, the Dominicans established the college of St. Thomas on the same hillock. However this location was thick in forestation as a result some of the friars were fatally bitten by venomous snakes that abounded in that area. The college of St. Thomas was transferred to Panelim in 1596. The Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church, Panjim was previously a small chapel. The chapel was elevated into a parish church in 1600 and was entirely rebuilt in 1619. Meanwhile, Panjim came to be known as New Goa and succeeded the City of Goa (now Old Goa) as the capital of the state of 1843. The artistic staircase leading to the Panjim church was built in 1870 and the present parochial residence was constructed in 1977. The huge bell on the central belfry of the Panjim church previously belonged to the Monastery of St. Augustine in Old Goa. The Panjim Church due to its prominent location is also a popular tourist spot and among the top churches visited in Goa. The Panjim Church is popular for its processions during the period of lent. Popular scenes depicted in the processions of the Panjim church are the Passion of Christ, which can be observed on Palm Sunday.
