D. Thomaz de Castro

The 3rd bishop D. Thomaz de Castro was the nephew of bishop D. Matheus de Castro, also a native of the village of Divar. He accompanied his uncle to Rome at a young age, where he entered the order of the regular clergy of divine providence and there occupied the positions of professor of philosophy and theology and master of novices. Elected to come on a mission in India, he was appointed prefect in the convent of his religious in Rome by the Holy Father, elevated to the rank of bishop of Fulsivelem and consecrated in 1671. — Three years later he arrived in India as apostolic vicar, he entered Canará in 1677 and was in open conflict with the archbishop of Goa D. Frei António Brandão over questions of jurisdiction.

The 3rd bishop was D. Thomas de Castro, a native of the island of Divar, a professed religious of the order of regular clerics of Divine Providence in Rome. He was a teacher and master of novices in his religion and having been elected to come to India with the title of mayor, he was chosen as bishop of Fulsivelem, and consecrated in the year 1571. He arrived in India in 1674, with the titles of vicar apostolic in the kingdoms of Cochin, Yanor, Ginge, Madure Moinsur, Cranganor, Caoanor and the entire coast of Canara, with the role of founder of his mission. He built a church in the said kingdom of Canara, where he was received by the Yukeis with great veneration; all together having great respect for their servants and their missionaries.
