Hypolito Bernardo Cypriano Gomes was born at Guirdolim, Salcete, Goa. He lived for more than 12 years in Portugal and during this time he took classes in Physics, Chemistry and History. He was then posted as the main teacher of the province of Mozambique. He returned to Goa in 1872 and after a year moved to Portugal.
