Pe Chico’s birth jubilee celebrated
The birth anniversary of Pe Chico Monteiro was celebrated at a function held at the Lar de Estudents, Altinho, on February 1. Mr. Tomazinho Cardozo, Hon’ble speaker of the Goa Assembly was the chief guest.
Scholarships and awards of excellence for 1947 were distributed. This year, the recipient of the award for excellence was Dr. Mrs. Camila Rangel Ribeiro da Costa of Porvorim and Mr. Manguesh Souza of Curca in the field of sports. A token of appreciation was also awarded to Miss Maria Fernandes of Pomburpa in the field of sports.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Esmeraldo Gomes, the Chairman of the Trust in the field of education, social service, etc. according to the deals of Pe Chico. He also spelled out the aims of the Trust with the understanding principle “that there may be limits to the resources but not to the resourcefulness”.
Mr. Tomazinho Cardozo pronounced the nostalgic moments of the association with Pe Chico and the good work done to the field of education, sports, music, and social upliftment. Mr. Cardozo narrated true incidents in his association with Pe Chico depicting good deeds towards the downtrodden.
Earlier, Fr Martinho Fernandes, whilst celebrating the mass highlighted the humility of Pe Chico and the single-handed efforts put in by him to build the Lar de Estudentes, the original home for the students under the Diocese of Goa. Mrs. Marina Monteiro welcomed the guests and compared the function. Mr. Selvio Fernandes, the Secretary of the Trust, read the report of activities.
The award of excellence carries a cash award of Rs 2000 and a citation. The beneficiaries of the scholarships are, P M Kulkarni(1st B Pharm), Elvin Menezes(SSC), Marushka Philips (Std V), Anna Maria Falco (Std V), Seema Naik (Std VI), Pramila Govekar (Std V), Anil Kumar Badigu (Std VII), Vancy Pinto (Std VI), Tereza D’Souza (III Inst Eng. Dip), Joel Estibeiro (Std IX), Samir Pawse (M.Com), Arnaldo Rodrigues (Std IX) and Prita Prabhu Desai (Higher Secondary).
The trust comprises of Engr Esmeraldo Gomes, Chairman. Mr. Olavo Paixo Pereira, Treasurer, Mr. Selvio Fernandes, Secretary, and Dr. Jose Monteiro, Dr. Sydney Pinto Rosario, Mrs. Ivonne Souza, Adv Trifonio Jacques, Dr. Franciscp Colaco, Mr. Wilfred Antao, Dr. Jose Rodrigues as members.
