The Sanctuary of the original church of St Michael in Anjuna seems to have been very small and out of proportion. In 1713, When Frei Pedro de Sta Maria was the Rector and Frei Francisco de Santa Ignes was the Provincial, a larger one was built. The expenses of the same were borne by the Gaunkars of the village of Anjuna.
