St. Lawrence Chapel, Arossim, Goa

St. Lawrence Chapel, Arossim, Goa is located in the village of Arossim in Cansaulim, South Goa. The St. Lawrence Chapel, Arossim, Goa was built in 1598 by Fr Gonsalo Carvalho SJ who was the second vicar of the Church of St Thomas at Cansaulim, Goa. The popular chapel on the hill in the nearby village of Cuelim, The Our Lady of Remedios, Cuelim was also built during the same period of time.

 

The St Lawrence Chapel was built in the Portuguese architectural style and was much marveled at by visitors to the chapel. Though the chapel has since suffered damage due to wear and tear and neglect, it has been renovated and restored to its former glory. The St. Lawrence Chapel, Arossim, Goa was first renovated in 1783 and then expanded to accommodate the growing number of parishioners in 1863 and again in 2001.

The feast of the Patron Saint of the Chapel, St Lawrence is celebrated on 10 August every year.Since this period is usually the time when the rice harvest is ready for reaping, paddy sheaves are blessed during the feast celebrations at St. Lawrence Chapel, Arossim, Goa.
